A New Dawn in Raleigh: Celebrating Entrepreneurship at Montague Plaza
Montague Plaza, recently unveiled in Raleigh, NC represents more than just a shopping center; it stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the local Black community. Every single space within this plaza is occupied by a Black-owned small business, painting a picture of diversity and community-driven entrepreneurship.
Stephanie Smith, one of the proud tenants of the plaza, eagerly prepares to launch her consignment shop, which will span an impressive 1,200 square feet. Beyond merely selling products, her shop will offer a variety of items, from intricate jewelry and premium cosmetics to refreshing fresh-squeezed juices. The budding entrepreneur also mentions available booth spaces, creating opportunities for other vendors to showcase their offerings.
The establishment of Montague Plaza has been more than just a business venture. For many, including Smith, it represents a chance to work and thrive in the neighborhood they call home. The sentiment is shared by James Montague, the visionary Black real estate developer behind the $4 million project. Growing up merely two blocks away from the plaza’s location, Montague envisioned this space as a means to accommodate Raleigh’s growth in a manner that is equitable and inclusive.
Tanya Binns, another tenant, sheds her corporate past to set up a consulting firm within the plaza. Her goal? To guide and educate the next generation, equipping them with knowledge and tools to start their own businesses. She encapsulates the collective sentiment of the plaza’s business owners, expressing a desire to contribute to Raleigh’s growth actively.
The excitement surrounding Montague Plaza was palpable during the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, with hundreds in attendance, including state and local leaders. This 15,000-square-foot space, now home to 14 commercial units, is more than just a building. It stands as a testament to local pride, growth, and a community’s dedication to fostering Black-owned businesses.
